Rand al’Thor, the Lord Dragon Reborn, did not succeed in the Last Battle, but rather, was taken by some of the revolting Red Ajah Aes Sedai, stilled and killed. The White Tower receded in on itself, in fear of the world’s reaction, but the Last Battle was closing in upon the world, and they had no time for the Tar Valon Aes Sedai.
The Salidar Aes Sedai, aided by the Asha’man of the Black Tower, were able to succeed and lock the Dark One in his prison once again, though the prophecies of his defeat were not fulfilled. Thankfully, the Dark One did not manage to taint Saidin or Saidar again, but rather, the Seals were surprisingly weak.
The old Forsaken were killed during or before Tarmon Gai’don, but the Dark One chose new agents, including one Nae’blis to rule them all. While the Dark One struggled with his seals on his prison, several new Chosen and Dreadlords worked in his place, trying to resurrect the strength of Shadow to take over the struggling world.
The Salidar Aes Sedai and the Black Tower Asha’man suffered devastating blows in the Last Battle, and there was still more to come, with the Shadow still free in the world.
Tar Valon was destroyed as the trollocs raged out of the Blight on the eve of the Last Battle. Divided as it was, it could not stand. The Salidar Aes Sedai, with their partner Black Tower, linked together and fought the Blight back, but the ancient White Tower was already destroyed. The Tar Valon Aes Sedai were granted a place among the Saldiar Towers on the condition that they accepted Asha'men as their equal and that they acknowledge the Black Tower. However, some Aes Sedai refused, creating a bitter rivalry between the new, true Salidar Towers, and the self-proclaimed Exiles.
These Exiles recruited among their ranks Shaido Wise Ones, members of the Kin, sul'dam who discovered their ability to channel, and even a handful of the Sea Folk channelers, all of whom deny the Asha'men and refused to recognize the new White Tower as the sole authority on channeling in the Westlands. The Red Ajah now only exists among the Exiles and they rule it in all but name, but their faction is disorganzied and full of strife, being at once prey to their own suspicions and breeding grounds for Darkfriends.
Since Tar Valon was destroyed, the Salidar Aes Sedai and the Asha'man retreated to Salidar, where they had created a working city and community. After the last battle, they created a new Tower for both the Aes Sedai and Asha’man, built by Ogier stonemasons. Instead of naming it after a certain color, they just called it the New Tower, a beacon of hope in the troubled times. The Gaidin began accepting women into their ranks, who became known as Gaidar. Their safehold is located behind the New Tower.
With Shadow raging in the world still, most civilizations have been wiped out. It has been only fifty years since the Dark One was sealed away, and the Seals are already beginning to crumble. The Chosen and Nae’blis are working hard to free their master.
Who will win this quest for power? Will the coming Fourth Age be a fall into Shadow, or a glorious victory into the Light, perhaps bringing a new Age of the Legends? The Wheel weaves as the Wheel wills.
