It's just for kids. When they grow up they'll start reading serious fantasy. Tolkien was the first fantasy I read, and I never found anything that matched it, although there's some good stuff ou there I've kept. But Harry Potter role play. As if.

I'm a fan of tolkien's stories, but I don't particularly like his writing style. It's a little bland if you ask me. I think he's a great storyteller, but a bad writer.

He was my first fantasy too, and the only other thing I've read that's solidly good fantasy is George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice & Fire series. I hear Wheel of Time is good too, but a 12-book series is a little intimidating.... but anyways, I think you're right. I can understand if kids like HP. It's just the adults are also crazy obsessed with such a childish story...
