Best Actor: It's all about the men this year. Still, a disturbing trend is emerging as critics' groups announce their winners. The cast of Return of the King are conspicuously absent, and it's starting to get on my nerves. These guys worked for a year and a half in New Zealand on a historic cinematic trilogy, wielding swords, riding horses and walking around with fur-covered feet--and they get nothing? Throughout the trilogy, Elijah Wood, particularly in King, carries the emotional weight of the odyssey and his eyes, as seen through Peter Jackson's lens, have never channeled so much of the actor's soul. I hope the Academy pays tribute. (i got this off the internet)

Best Supporting Actor: People say the actors in the LOTR trilogy have little chance of being recognized because of all the CGI wizardry around them. Harrumph, I say. Sean Astin cannot leave the Kodak Theater without a statue. And after Viggo Mortensen's skillful PR campaign (big magazine profiles, including the cover of Vanity Fair), I can't imagine living in a world where he wouldn't be nominated. It's too soon for Orlando "I'm not gay" Bloom but not for The Last Samurai's Ken Watanabe, as "the next-to-last samurai"--the standout performance in a weak film. And I would be very happy if Crowe's acting partner Paul Bettany got a nod this year.

sorry to make you disappointed, but I think Best Actor is most likely to go to Sean Penn. His performance in Mystic River is the best bloody acting I've seen in ages (in a hollywood movie, that is...)

Epic fantasy film "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" has added more silver to its burgeoning trophy cabinet at Britain's annual Empire magazine awards, picking up the coveted best film gong. "Rings," an Oscar favorite after scoring big at the Golden Globes in Los Angeles, also won the best British actor accolade for Andy Serkis for his role as the animated creature Gollum. "I'd like to say thank you to all the Empire readers who were clearly intelligent and could see that there was an actor involved in the part," Serkis told the ceremony. The film's "Ride of the Rohirrim" sequence was named movie scene of the year.
