What is your favorite fantasy series and why?

It's a close call between three, Robert Jordan's Wheel Of Time, G.R.R Martin's A Song Of Ice And Fire and Robin Hobb's Farseer, The Liveship Traders & The Tawny Man (Three trilogies all set in the same world.)
Jordan is the best in creating a world, and building plots that work on multiple levels. Martin is the best writer, and Hobb is the best story-teller.
An extra cred to Tolkien for being the first, but LOTR is nowhere near these three in quality.

My favourite fantasy series... is The Forgotten Realms. I have, since reading Dissolution, become thoroughly addicted to it... Yes.. I now love Dark Elves... but, other than that, I don't have much more to say.

I haven't read that many, but WoT is by far my favourite at the moment. Why is a harder question to answer... I think it's because he's put so much effort into the world he's creating, plus I simply like his style of writing. I also like the Heritage of Shannara by Terry Brooks. Takes a little effort to get into, but once you do it's a good read. His characters are likeable enough and you really just want to see the heroes succeed.

My favorite series (besides LotR, Tolkien kinda goes in his own category) would have to be aSoIaF by George Martin...It's not the typical fantasy story of good and evil, but the war between feuding families that are fighting for the throne. It's not something you see very often in fantasy books, and Martin is an extremely good writer...also it offers many characters in many different situations, and you'd find yourself relating to at least one of them...I can't explain it very well but I love the series and it definitely tops my list.

My favorite is still the Wheel of Time both because it's awesome and because i haven't really read any other series that i've liked

Well, I don't consider LOTR a series, or else that would be mine by a longshot.

Well im not sure if LOTR is a series...it is in 3 parts...but anyway, thats my 1st! 2nd is Kate Elliott's Crown of Stars closely followed by Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time.....actually im not sure about that order, i think they're joint second!! As for why, need i explain for LOTR?? CoS i love for it's beautiful characters and brilliant storylines. WoT is just so immense and complex a creation, i dont think anyone can deny it is not a work of art as far as fantasy series' go.

Yeah, but it's really just one book that was broken into 3 sections (or 6, depending).

Ooops, I completely forgot one of my absolute favourites, The Gormenghast Trilogy by Mervyn Peake. It's an amazing story, and a completely unique world.
So to rank the top 5... 1. ASOIAF - George R.R. Martin 2. WOT - Robert Jordan 3. The Farseer, The Liveship Trader & The Tawny Man trilogies - Robin Hobb 4. Gormenghast - Mervyn Peake 5. LOTR - Tolkien

Oh, the series are nowhere Near the books. The way Peake writes is one of the most intense experiences in the world of fantasy. And I think Fuchsia will be quite a surprise for you, I was really disappointed with the way she was portrayed on telly. She's a far more fascinating character in the books.
