It was with great anticipation I opened the book. After all, I've been waiting for two years for this...
It starts quite low-paced. Seemingly low-paced, as there is a lot of talking in the beginning. But you soon realize that this talking is to be very different from the talking in WH and COT. People actually communicate. And they reveal things in pretty much every single chapter. RJ throws in answers o questions we've had for a long time, both small and big. I predict that when the book is officially released, the messageboards on the major WOT-sites will be quite chaotic.
It doesn't take long until the pace increases though. And how it increases, we're talking the pace of the first five books here. We get major updates of all the main characters, and a lot of minor characters are involved as well.
If you've read Jason's review, you know that Nynaeve has a very emotional moment. To be perfectly honest, I had tears in my eyes when I read it. It's indeed very emotional, and beautifully written. During that moment we get to see RJ at the top of his writing ability, if you're not touched you don't have a heart.
And best of all, that wasn't the only time I had to discretely wipe my eyes. Some long-awaited things finally happens.
Things happening is the main thing about this book. So many plotlines are either completely solved, or at least advanced to the point that the next book will be very focused on Tarmon Ghaidon.
because Tarmon Ghaidon is coming. Remember the ghosts in COT? believe me, that was nothing. In KOD the Wheel itself seems to be on the verge of unravelling.
So, is there any action? Oh yes, the bodycount is the highest since LOC. Among the dead quite a few characters we're at least somewhat familiar with.
RJ has said that we'll be sweating towards the end. Wrong, the sweating starts much earlier.
I've only got one complaint about this book, there's one scene I think could have been written better. Or rather, written more. I felt a bit cheated.
But otherwise it's the best book since LOC, one of the best of the series. The slow pace of WH and COT are much more motivated now, because things built up in those books we're crucial in order for KOD to be what it is.
I'll be back discussing this in october:)
