At the beginning of the movie we are introduced to the young Elizabeth Swann, who is the daughter of the Governer of Port Royal. They are on a ship along with Lieutenant Norrington. We are also introduced to Gibbs, who is one of the sailors. Elizabeth sees a boy on a piece of driftwood in the water, and calls out to the others.
The boy is hauled aboard and the crew spots a burning ship. Gibbs suggests pirates as the cause. Governer Swann tells Elizabeth to look after the boy, and he wakes up just long enough to tell her his name is William Turner. Then Elizabeth notices that he is wearing a medallion around his neck with a picture of a skull on it.
Believing that this is a pirate medallion, Elizabeth hides it from the grownups. As she studies the medallion closely, she looks up and sees a ship flying a pirates flag.
Elizabeth wakes up from this dream of her as a young girl. It has been 10 years since Will was rescued and the medallion taken by Elizabeth. She gets up and goes to a secret drawer in her dresser, from which she pulls out the medallion and puts it around her neck.
She is startled by a knock on the door and in comes her father with some maids. He has brought her a new dress to wear for Norrington's promotional ceremony, at which Norrington will become Commodore. The maids help her put it on and lace up the corset.
Meanwhile, Will Turner is downstairs waiting for the governer. Will has become a talented blacksmith and is delivering the sword he made for Norrington's promotion. The governer comes down to meet him and Will demonstrates the fineness of the sword.
Elizabeth comes downstairs and we see Will breathless over her. Elizabeth and her father leave and Will looks after them. The next shot we see is of captain Jack Sparrow.
He is sailing on a small boat, which is sinking. He arrives at Port Royal at the perfect moment to step off his sinking boat onto the dock.
Meanwhile, Elizabeth is at Norrington's promotion ceremony, feeling faint with the heat and her corset.
Jack tries to board the Intercepter ship and is stopped by the guards Murtogg and Mullroy. They talk about the Black Pearl, a ship supposedly "crewed by the feeted and captained by a man so evil Hell itself spat him back out."
Back at the fort, Commodore Norrington proposes to Elizabeth.
Elizabeth, faint from her corset, falls over the battlement into the water below.
Jack, who is still talking to the guards, sees Elizabeth fall. He dives into the water and saves her from drowning.
Governer Swann and Norrington meet Jack as he carries Elizabeth onto the dock. Norrington reveals Jack's arm, which has a brand "P" for pirate.
Jack is handcuffed, but pulls Elizabeth to him as a shield and demands his effects. As he shoves Elizabeth towards them, Jack makes a daring escape.
Jack sneaks into the blacksmith's shop, the owner who is in a drunken sleep. Jack tries to cut his shackles off. Will, who works at the shop, returns from delivering Norrington's sword, and finds Jack. The two of them sword fight until Norrington's men come and take Jack away to put him in jail.
The Black Pearl atacks Port Royal and the pirates terrorize the citizens.
Elizabeth is captured and taken to the Black Pearl, where she begs Captain Barbossa to leave Port Royal. He refuses until he finds she has the medalion, and when she hands it over the ship leaves Port Royal...with Elizabeth aboard.
When Will discovers that Elizabeth has been taken, he goes to Jack's cell to ask him for help. When Jack learns Will's name, he agrees to help, and Will frees Jack from his cell.
Jack and Will commandeer the Intercepter ship from Port Royal.
Jack reveals that Will Turner, Sr. was a pirate. At first Will refuses to believe his father was a pirate, but in the end agrees to continue on to Tortuga with Jack.
Meanwhile, back on the Black Pearl, Captain Barbossa tells Elizabeth about the curse: Barbossa and his crew had stolen a chest of cursed gold. Neither alive nor dead, the crew would remain cursed until each piece of gold- and a blood sacrifice- from each pirate who had helped take the gold.
The moonlight shows the pirates in their true undead state- as live skeletons.
Back in Tortuga, Jack meets up with Gibbs, who puts together a crew for Jack and Will to be able to follow the Black Pearl and rescue Elizabeth. Will discovers that Jack used to be the Captain of the Black Pearl before Barbossa and the crew committed mutiny.
Since Elizabeth had told Barbossa that her last name is Turner, he believes that a blood sacrifice from her, along with the last piece of gold (the medallion) will end the curse. They reach Isle de Muerta and Barbossa slits her hand, only to find the curse has not been lifted.
Jack and Will make it to the island just in time to see Elizabeth cast to the ground by a disappointed Barbossa. Will takes Elizabeth back to the Intercepter and leaves Jack to be found by Barbossa's crew.
Barbossa takes Jack aboard and the Black Pearl catches up to the Intercepter and attacks it.
Elizabeth is taken captive again on the Black Pearl. Will is stuck on the sinking Intercepter but manages to break free. He boards the Black Pearl and threatens to take his life (so the blood sacrifice they need would be lost) if Barbossa does not let Elizabeth go free.
Barbossa ties up Will and makes Elizabeth and Jack walk the plank.
Elizabeth and Jack are left on a deserted island while Barbossa takes Will back to Isle de Meurta.
Rum runners had left a cache of rum on the island. Elizabeth builds a fire with the rum so the smoke can alert her rescuers of her whereabouts.
Norrington and the Governer rescue Jack and Elizabeth and only after Elizabeth promises to marry Norrington does he agree to go back to the Isle de Meurta to rescue Will.
Jack manages to arrive at the treasure cave just in time to catch Barbossa about to slit Will's throat.
Jack convinces Barbossa not to remove the curse until Barbossa and his crew attacks Norrington's ship and kills his men.
Barbossa's undead skeleton crew walks underwater to Norrington's ship and quietly climbs aboard, swarming the ship.
Meanwhile, Jack secretly takes a piece of gold from the chest to curse himself (and so become unable to be killed). Barbossa and Jack deul.
Jack slits his hand and tosses his piece of gold back into the chest. Then he shoots Barbossa. Quickly, Will slits his hand and puts his own piece into the chest, ending the curse.Barbossa opens his jacket to see that Jack's shot was not wasted; as the blood spreads, Barbossa falls down dead.
Back at Port Royal, Jack is at his hanging.
Will goes up to Elizabeth and proclaims his love for her, then rescues Jack with an exciting sword play scene.
At the end, Will and Jack are cornered by the Port Royal guards. Elizabeth proclaims her love for Will and the two kiss.
Jack sees that the Black Pearl, now sailed by Gibbs and his crew, has come for him, and he escapes the guards by falling into the water. He is hauled aboard and is once again Captain of the Black Pearl.
