lol- well, it goes- u (universal -anyone can see it), pg (parental guidance- kis need to be accompanied by an adult) 12(they've made 12A now, so younger kids can see it with a parent or adult... , 15, 18 - when it gets to the numbers it just you have to be that age or older to see it... not that anyone actually follows the rules... What are the American ones? I want to know, but can't find out...

the first rating is G --don't know what it stands for. then PG --Parental guidance. G's and PG's are almost the same, though G's are usually a bit more squeeky clean. then PG-13 --thirteen or older(i wonder how many people actually follow that rule...) for rated r you have to be 18 or older or accompanied by an adult. rated r movies have are a wide range, they could be from a film with just bad language and perhaps some scary scenes to really hardcore scary stuff or inappropraite things. x is the worst rating, not even allowed to go into the theaters. hoped i helped you out a bit.

thanks! Finally I know the American (is it the American way?) rating thingies... yay! I'm not aware of any 'x''s that aren't allowed in the cinemas- but I suppose they're just 18's thatdon't go into the cinemas anyway... I don't really know as I haven't exactly been trying to see one...
