There is a good reason behind Denethor's actions, but PJ left that out for some reason, known only by himself. Hopefully he'll throw it in when the extended version comes out, among with all the pther important stuff he left out.
*shakes fist at PJ since he didn't shoot one of the most important scenes at all*

i thought that denethor was very good, for what was put in. They explained that he liked boromir better, which is in the books, and PJ put in the pyre which was very good. It was alright. In the books i dont think that pippin had to sing though...billy boyd sang very wonderfully

but he missed the explanation why denethor acted the way he did, why he had given up all hope. As for pippin singing, in the books denethior asks him if he can sing, basically the same dialogue as in the movie. but he doesn't actually sing. And I think that scene were pretty unnecessary, it seemed to only have one purpose, making denethor look bad, something that isn't completely true. But PJ made the same thing with Faramir in TTT, portraying him as worse than he actually is. It's a shame that he makes mistakes like these, in a movie that's good otherwise.
But of course, everyone has their own interpretation of how he should have handled the books...

but you dont understand...the ring changes all of those who come into contact with it...in the book, faramir just says that if the ring were lying by the road that he would nt pick it up... if PJ had left it like that, then it would be showing that the ring was losing its power...PJ had to make the movie understandable for people unlike you and me who have not read the books... but...each to his own opinion, though your differ from mine (note: that explanation was summarized from an actual converstaion that jackson had with my LOTR fan club magazine when he was explaining why he did that...)

To be changed by the ring you need to be in physical contact with it, and that for more than a moment. The way PJ showed it, especially with the scene he made up with the interraction between Faramir, Boromir and Denethor, it looks like Faramir is somkind of jealous brat, ready to do anything to get daddy's approval. And frankly, I don't give a s**t what jackson says in interviews, if there's a conflict between movie and book the book is always the original.
I'm not saying he hasn't done a good job, I like the movies, and they are definitly better than I thought they would be when I heard that PJ was going to make it. But they could've been better.
