i have discovered why i found sightreading so hard. i never learnt to read music properly. those annoying little sharps and flats mean absolutely nothing to me.
i still blame my second teacher (although that may be somewhat unfair). apart from seeing that the blobs went up or down, i didn't really read the music...
ah well, if i had learnt that earlier, it might have helped. no wonder i can still remember my grade pieces. i must have learnt them off by heart

Lol, ne3p - I have a lot of trouble reading notes, too.
I have played the Cello for the last five years, though I still have to hear a song (and see the notes) before I can play it.
I took a year of piano, but it just really wasn't my sort of instrument, so I switched to the Cello. I'm going to start taking the Guitar soon, and then I plan on learning the drums, Violin, and Viola. Those would all be cool. The Contrabass would be okay, but it is like, the most 'accompanying' instrument there is in an orchestra (can you imagine a Contrabass solo? I can't think of any).

have you taken a Music Theory course? that usually helps a lot for reading music

I think I can read music better than I can actually play it. That sort of sucks.
